Getachew Alemu

Mr. Getachew is an intellectual property (IP) expert, who studied IP in University of London, and has made impact in strengthening the IP regime and promoting the use of IP as a tool for development in Africa for over 25 years. He drafted and implemented most of the present IP laws of Ethiopia and headed the Ethiopian Intellectual Property Office as its first Director General until August 2008. He strengthened IP regimes of a number of developing countries including Bangladesh, Burundi, Cameroun, The Gambia, Liberia, Namibia, Malawi, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda and Zanzibar.

Mr. Getachew initiated and implemented projects that demonstrate the significance of the IP system in meeting socio-economic development goals and defeating the erroneous perception that intellectual property is not in the interest of developing countries. Mr. Getachew served as an adjunct lecturer and professor at Addis Ababa University School of Law and other Colleges. He authored and/or co- Authored over 20 works on IP and related topics published in books, reputed international Journals and conference proceeding. He served as a resource specialist and made presentations at national, regional and international intellectual property meetings and conferences organized in over 40 countries organized by ARIPO, European Union, International Development Law Organization (IDLO), UNECA, US Department of Commerce, WIPO, World Trade Organization (WTO) and Yale University.

The contribution of Getachew is well recognized. He was awarded Yale World Fellowship in 2006 and received an Award from the President of Ethiopia in 2008.
